How do you read an electrolyte label?

Short answer: read three things, in this order: the ingredient list, the milligrams of each electrolyte per serving, and the carbohydrate line. A good label names the form of every mineral, lists sodium, potassium, and magnesium separately in milligrams, and keeps the ingredient list short. If those numbers are missing, hidden inside a proprietary blend, or outweighed by sugar and flavourings, the label is doing the hiding for you.

 

Start with the ingredient list, not the front of the pouch

 

The front of the pouch is marketing. Words like clean, premium, and science-backed are not defined by anyone and mean whatever the brand wants them to. The ingredient list on the back is the part that is actually regulated, so read it first and read it whole.

 

A short list is a good sign. An electrolyte powder only needs a few things: a sodium source, a potassium source, and a magnesium source. When the list runs to ten or twelve lines, most of the pouch is not electrolytes. It is sweeteners, acids, anti-caking agents, and flavour. None of those move your sodium, potassium, or magnesium.

 

Find the milligrams of each electrolyte

 

This is the number that decides whether the product works. A real label lists sodium, potassium, and magnesium separately, each in milligrams per serving. If it only says electrolyte blend with one combined figure, you cannot tell how much of anything you are getting.

 

For reference, sweat costs you roughly 0.5 to 1.5 g of sodium per litre, so sodium is usually the one worth the most attention. A serving built for that lands around 1000 mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, and 60 mg magnesium. Plenty of powders quietly carry 200 to 300 mg of sodium and lean on flavour to feel like more. The taste hides the dose. The panel does not.

 

Check the serving size before you trust the numbers

 

Every figure on the panel is per serving, and the serving size is set by the brand. One product calls a serving one teaspoon (about 3.5 g). Another calls it two scoops. The milligrams only mean something once you know how much powder they refer to.

 

Do the arithmetic for what you actually take. A number that looks generous per double scoop is less impressive once you halve it, and a dose quoted against a single gram of powder can make a small amount read as a big one. Recompute against the amount you will really use.

 

Read the form of each mineral, not just the name

 

Magnesium 60 mg tells you the quantity, not the kind. Magnesium oxide, malate, and citrate are all magnesium, but they are not interchangeable on the shelf. The form sits in the ingredient list; the amount sits on the panel. You need both lines to understand one mineral.

 

The others work the same way. Potassium can arrive as citrate or as chloride. Sodium can come from plain table salt or from a mineral salt such as Himalayan pink salt. The names are in the ingredients, so match each amount on the panel to its source in the list. A label that gives you both is being straight with you.

 

Read the carbohydrate and sugar lines

 

Carbohydrate and of which sugars are listed in grams. This is where a hydration drink can turn out to be a soft drink. A standard sports drink runs about 6 g of sugar per 100 ml, so a 500 ml bottle carries roughly 30 g. Powders vary: some add a few grams of dextrose per serving, some fold it in under a flavour name.

 

If both lines read 0 g, the product adds no sugar to your day and has zero glycemic impact, which is a fact about the powder and not a health claim. If they do not, the figure in grams is what you are drinking. Scan the ingredients for the usual sources too: sugar, glucose, dextrose, maltodextrin, cane sugar, and flavour blends that carry sweeteners.

 

The phrase to distrust: proprietary blend

 

Proprietary blend and electrolyte complex are the phrases that let a label avoid the one thing you came to read. They quote a single combined weight and never break it down, so you cannot see how much sodium, potassium, or magnesium is actually inside. The blend might be mostly the cheapest ingredient. You have no way to check.

 

Treat a refusal to itemise as an answer in itself. A brand confident in its doses prints them. A brand hiding a thin dose reaches for a blend.

Carbohydrate line. 0 g if you want zero sugar; a real number if it is a fuelling drink.

Serving size. A realistic amount, so the numbers are not inflated by a tiny scoop.

 

If a label passes all five, it is telling you the truth about itself. If it fails three, the front of the pouch is doing the talking.
